Obtaining a Thai Marriage Visa

The process of applying for a Thai Marriage Visa requires careful attention to detail and adherence to the requirements set out by the authorities. It also involves annual renewal at the local Thai Immigration office.


Getting married to a Thai national allows foreigners to live in Thailand for extended periods of time. The Thai Marriage Visa, or Non Immigrant Category O visa, is a long-term residency option that can be renewed yearly as long as the couple remains legally married and meets financial requirements.

Applicants must submit a completed visa application, a marriage certificate officially recognized by the Thai government, and financial evidence such as bank or income statements. They must also provide a passport and recent passport-sized photos. It is recommended that applicants familiarize themselves with Thai culture and language before applying for a marriage visa.

If you want to work while living in Thailand, be sure to secure a Work Permit in advance of your arrival. In addition, you must report your address to Immigration every 90 days and obtain a re-entry permit before exiting the country or your visa will expire. After three years of continuous residence through visa extensions, a spouse of a Thai citizen can qualify for Permanent Residency in the country.


A Thai Marriage Visa allows a foreigner to live long-term in Thailand. The visa must be renewed annually. In order to maintain their status, the spouse must report to Immigration every 90 days. In addition, the couple must pay an embassy fee and charges for legal services.

The interview is conducted by a Consular Officer at the US Embassy in Bangkok and is usually scheduled within a couple weeks of receiving all the required documents. During the interview you will be asked questions about your relationship and why you are getting married. You will also need to provide proof of financial support if you are sponsoring your Thai spouse.

The embassy staff will notify you via email once your Packet 3 is complete and your interview date has been set. If you are unable to attend your interview you can request to have it rescheduled. Be aware that it is not guaranteed that a new date will be available.
